Before the camera, before radar, there was the naturalist's sketchbook. The botanical plate, the specimen jar, the careful annotation in careful ink. That word did a lot of honest work in the nineteenth century, and it's worth remembering the U in UFO is doing the same job now. These designs share a language: the cross-hatched linework of nineteenth-century illustration, the ghost-white-on-Prussian-blue of Anna Atkins' cyanotypes, the crowded abundance of the Victorian greenhouse. Atkins, if you don't know her, made what's generally considered the first book ever illustrated with photographs, pressing algae onto light-sensitive paper in the 1840s. Each design uses that visual world to document something her generation never had the instruments to catch. A lily dissolving into saucers at the petal edge. A craft trailing wildflowers wherever it passes, more gardener than invader. A squadron that somehow ended up on the cyanotype paper among the ferns and oak leaves, catalogued without panic, captioned without explanation.

In a way it's the most honest corner of the catalogue. These designs make no claims. They make observations, in the most careful visual language ever devised for the job, and leave classification to whoever comes next. Which has always been the correct procedure when confronting the unknown.
